Manga Scroll

Elaine Mitchener performs Christian Marclay’s Manga Scroll

Extract of live performance of Manga Scroll in Bremen as part of Weseburg MOMA’s KABOOM! Exhibition (26 Sept 2013).

Manga Scroll (2010), Marclay cut and collaged onomatopoeias pulled from Manga comics originally published in Japan and translated for U.S. audiences. Marclay then digitally manipulated the hundreds of sound words torn from their pop-cultural context (FWUP! CREEAK! SKRRR!) and printed them on a sixty-foot rice paper scroll in order to create the composition meant to be interpreted by voice.  Having performed the work at Aldeburgh Music in 2012, I was then invited to present the work in Bremen at the Weseburg MOMA.
